Post Commander John Sentino joined the Hawaii Army National Guard, (29th Infantry Brigade, 29th Support Battalion, Headquarters) in Oct.,1965. He attended basic training at Fort Ord Calif., and completed on-the-job training at Presidio of San Francisco. The 29th Infantry Brigade was put on full active duty status in 1968 to man Schofield Barracks on Oahu, when North Korea hijacked the USS Pueblo off its coast on Jan. 23, 1968. While in Schofield, Cmdr. Sentino's unit was trained for jungle warfare and then sent to Vietnam for duty in various military occupation specialties (MOS) required by the Army. Cmdr. Sentino deployed to Vietnam in 1969 and was stationed in Long Bin, the largest military base in-country, under the command of Gen. William C. Westmoreland. He returned to the United States in Dec., 1969 and was discharged on Dec. 12 of that year.
